Childlike at Work and Why it's Important

Childlike at Work and Why it's Important

Yesterday I received a video from a colleague. It was hilarious and yet struck me profoundly. It reminded me of some words I read in the Bible the other day. Something about having faith like a child. I wondered if I still could think like a child at work. You see, I was very good at being a kid. Before I go too far into things let me remind you that being childlike and childish are words with very different meanings. Childish means immature, obnoxiousness, selfish and such.
    The Gifts of Summer

    The Gifts of Summer

The neighborhood kids are all back to school and the mornings seem a bit darker. Even though I hate to admit it, summer is all but gone. My family is separated for the first time as the young adults in the house are attending three different schools. Soon the garden tomatoes and the summer beets from my mother-in-law’s garden will vanish for the year. Before I had the chance to relish the gifts of summer, it ended. I always go into summer with high expectations, higher than c
    Stop Chasing Your Dreams

    Stop Chasing Your Dreams

Can you believe I'm saying that? It's true, I think we should stop chasing dreams and start following our strengths. Let me explain... Yesterday was a big day for my family. My youngest daughter has embarked on an adventure of a lifetime. You see, she’s a ballet dancer. As you know, many dancers try and only a few succeed. Her next step is a pre-professional school, Ballet Chicago. For the record, I’m freaked out. Yes, I’m worried for her. Yes, she’s way too young to be danc

Why I'd Rather be Nuts Than Normal

Mom viewed me through the lens of possibility, and not my weaknesses. Sure I have them but, that's not the point. The point is the poten

    The "Totality" of Strengths-Based Coaching

    The "Totality" of Strengths-Based Coaching

"Totality" is the moment of total eclipse of the sun. Something we experienced this afternoon in Nebraska and across the United States. As I reflect upon the eclipse I can't help but think about the sun and the moon. Both add light and yet each represent the opposite force. On the one side we have morning or light, and on the other darkness or night. Yet every once in a while from our perspective they come together. Daytime kisses nighttime. The moon blocks the sun. It's so c
    Everyone Needs a Coach

    Everyone Needs a Coach

There's something powerful about the Rocky Mountains. Many would be explorers return to camp with skinned knees and bruised egos. The culprit isn't the granite that you must navigate to succeed. The problem is altitude. The higher you climb the thinner the air gets. The thinner the air gets the more work it takes to hike. It’s like breathing through a straw. A great climb leads to wonderful vistas. But the allure of the view dissipates during the pain of the moment. Many star
Don't Give Your Minnow a Fishhook

Don't Give Your Minnow a Fishhook

It's not others assessment that causes you the most angst. Aren't people allowed to have an opinion? It's that not so silent voice inside that rips you to pieces causing all sort of problems. What if you changed that? You can in an instant. You are your own worst critic. Rather than playing small let your self off the hook. When the inner voice screams failure - be gentle and kind. Don't give your minnow a fishhook to play with. See yourself through the lens of your talent. E
